Position Overview:
We are seeking a results-driven Underwriting Manager to lead a team of mortgage underwriters in achieving daily, weekly, and monthly production and quality goals. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring the integrity of loan decisions, maintaining compliance with investor and regulatory requirements, and fostering a high-performance team culture through mentorship, communication, and continuous improvement.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of conventional underwriting guidelines, and a commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage a team of 10–15 underwriters, providing daily direction, performance oversight, and developmental support
Monitor production and quality metrics to ensure monthly targets and service level agreements (SLAs) are consistently met
Conduct random audits of initial credit decisions for accuracy and compliance with licensing regulations
Hold regular one-on-one coaching sessions with team members to address challenges, track performance, and implement action plans for success
Facilitate daily huddles to communicate updates, review results, and reinforce key messages
Send daily production emails with tips, updates, and plans to maintain service levels
Act as a subject matter expert (SME), providing guidance on underwriting scenarios, guidelines, and best practices
Collaborate with fellow Underwriting Managers to share insights, align processes, and ensure consistency across teams
Identify performance trends and partner with the Quality and Unit Managers to recommend training and process enhancements
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of lender, investor, and regulatory requirements, including Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and ECOA
Support issue resolution related to in-line QC, post-closing audits, and escalated underwriting decisions
Serve as an escalation point for internal and external inquiries regarding underwriting decisions and scope
Partner with Processing and Unit Managers to ensure appropriate pipeline coverage and compliance with licensing rules
Approve timecards in ADP and address personnel matters in coordination with the Unit Leader and Human Resources
Conduct formal performance reviews and ongoing employee development initiatives
Ensure no Personal or Proprietary Information (PPI) is left unsecured in the team environment
Promote a customer-first culture by ensuring underwriting decisions align with client satisfaction and compliance objectives
Monitor daily underwriting productivity, including credit approvals, counteroffers, declines, and dispositions, to meet team benchmarks
Ensure timely completion of initial credit decisions within SLA targets

Qualifications:
Minimum 3+ years of experience in a management role within conventional mortgage underwriting
Hands-on underwriting experience within the past 3 years
Expert knowledge of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guidelines and AUS (DU/LP) systems
Strong leadership, coaching, and performance management capabilities
Proven ability to balance risk with customer-centric solutions
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Highly detail-oriented with solid analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to lead in a fast-paced, production-focused, and regulatory-compliant environment
Proficiency in digital tools and paperless workflows
NMLS-MLO Licensure preferred
Availability to work outside regular business hours as needed
