Overview
A residential mortgage lender is seeking an experienced Director of Technology to lead the strategic direction, daily operations, and continued development of its enterprise technology function.
This position requires a leader who combines strong technical knowledge with deep residential mortgage experience and exceptional communication skills. The Director will serve as the primary connection between IT, executive leadership, and departments throughout the organization.
The successful candidate must be technically credible, capable of earning the respect of an experienced IT team, and able to explain technology strategy, risks, priorities, and capabilities clearly to nontechnical stakeholders.
This leader will balance operational stability with continued transformation while strengthening internal processes, developing the existing team, and advancing automation, AI, and decisioning capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and develop an IT organization of approximately 17 employees.
- Directly manage approximately five technology leaders.
- Oversee daily IT operations, service delivery, applications, infrastructure, data, security, and technology vendors.
- Serve as the organization’s senior internal expert across technology and residential mortgage operations.
- Develop and execute the company’s IT vision, master plan, and long-range technology roadmap.
- Strengthen communication and alignment between IT, executive leadership, and business departments.
- Translate business needs into practical, scalable technology strategies and solutions.
- Maintain operational stability and reliability while advancing modernization initiatives.
- Improve processes related to documentation, cross-training, accountability, staff development, and service delivery.
- Position team members for success and support the continued maturation of the IT department.
- Oversee software applications, third-party services, infrastructure, data governance, solution architecture, engineering, and Information Security.
- Manage and optimize a multimillion-dollar annual IT operating budget.
- Evaluate vendor performance, technology spending, business value, and ROI.
- Lead technology-dependent corporate projects and cross-functional initiatives.
- Oversee Information Security risk, compliance, consumer privacy, and protection of company assets.
- Evaluate and introduce automation, AI, decisioning tools, and other technologies that improve organizational performance.
- Communicate technology priorities, progress, and risks through written updates, presentations, meetings, video, and in-person engagement.
- Support company policies, strategies, and governance standards.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in information technology development and/or operations.
- 10+ years of technology management experience.
- 5+ years of residential mortgage industry experience.
- Strong understanding of both mortgage operations and enterprise technology.
- Demonstrated ability to lead daily IT operations and long-term technology strategy.
- Experience leading, developing, and earning the trust of experienced technology teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to translate technical issues and strategies for executives and nontechnical stakeholders.
- Experience with enterprise applications and software services management or development.
- Strong understanding of infrastructure, data governance, solution architecture, and engineering.
- Experience overseeing Information Security, consumer privacy, compliance, and technology risk.
- Experience managing multimillion-dollar IT operating budgets.
- Experience managing third-party technology providers and evaluating ROI.
- Ability to balance operational stability with technology transformation.
- Experience with Encompass and other mortgage technology platforms preferred.
- Experience with automation, AI, or technology-enabled decisioning preferred.
- Master’s degree preferred; equivalent professional experience accepted.
- Ability to travel approximately 15% as needed.
